Comment

The motto on this token alludes to the Bossuet coat of arms: "Azure, three golden wheels, set two and one".

The Bossuet family (sometimes spelled "Boussuet") has been known in Burgundy since 1353, and occupied the first offices of the Parliament as early as the mid-15th century. Jacques Bossuet was appointed a member of Parliament on May 23, 1579; he held the title of Viscount Mayeur of Dijon in 1612, 1613 and 1614.

Jacques Bossuet was the son of Antoine Bossuet, auditor at the Burgundy Parliament, and Jeanne Richar de Ruffey. At birth, he had a sister: Marie Thérèse (b. 1746). He married Claudine de Bretagne on Wednesday April 15, 1579, with whom he had two children: Claude and Denise. He died on Monday November 2, 1637. His son became a member of Parliament and Lord of Aiserey, and was elected mayor on June 21, 1647, then re-elected in June 1648.
