In 1872 Hanover opened it's first horse tramway. Two companies expanded the network in the following years. In 1892 they merged to form Straßenbahn Hannover AG. Between 1893 and 1903 the network was electrified and extended far into the surrounding area. In 1901, the route network had reached a length of 163 kilometers. The routes led to Sarstedt, Hildesheim, Barsinghausen, Gehrden, Großburgwedel, Pattensen and Sehnde. In 1921 the name was changed: Üstra was originally the abbreviation for Überlandwerke und Straßenbahnen Hannover AG. The company also provided electricity to private customers as well as operating bus and tram services - not only in the city of Hannover but also to the outlying villages and small towns. In 1960, the company changed its name to Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe (ÜSTRA) AG, then to ÜSTRA Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe AG in 1980, changing the word üstra to lowercase in 1996.
