The Styrian National Exhibition took place from 1959 to 2006, following the example of agricultural model fairs, art expositions and the world exhibitions of the 19th century. After a biennial rhythm, it was held almost annually in different places in Styria from 1986 to 2006. Each time, the exhibition is based on a different theme, which usually has a connection to the organizing location. From 2008, the regional exhibition took place every other year on the site of the Styrian national exhibition. The relationship to art and culture should be reinforced and economic issues taken into the background. The country's financial contribution was first cut to 4 and finally to 2 million euro and earmarked for the design of the exhibition. Funds for infrastructural measures and framework programmes must be raised by the organising municipality or region in other ways. With the reduction of the Styrian cultural budget by 6 million euros from 2013 onwards, the regional one was also discontinued.
