The fort was built to protect the Rochefort arsenal, one of the most prestigious in the country. The exact reason for the construction of this fort, in addition to the batteries of cannons available on the coasts of the various islands, was that the range of the cannons at the time (around 1,500 m) was too short compared to the 5.3 km separating Aix and Oléron, leaving an unreachable zone between the two islands. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Boyard_(monument)https://www.fan-fortboyard.fr/pages/emission/animaux-de-fort-boyard.html
