The Crescent City booster group wanted to liven up the July 4th, 1938 festivities. They had 'Pieces of Eight' struck which they distributed during the parade while riding in their "Pirate Ship Float". The rollicking crowd could spend them around town at a value of 50¢ each. They also trapped seagulls, and colored their feathers red, white & blue with food coloring. On the 4th they turned the flock loose at the beachfront.(Info courtesy Del Norte County Historical Society.)
