This is a Charles Shelley fruit machine token for use in Shelley supplied machines. The address is Shelley’s business post office address. The tokens were used in fruit machines imported by Charles Shelley and modified for Australian use. Tokens such as this one were manufactured locally for use in his machines.

There were other suppliers of machines and the tokens to operate them. There are about 50 different tokens are already listed in Australian catalogues and research including the CCM and BRISBANE tokens which were not used in Clubs but in hotel or foyers of businesses.

An NSW Royal Commission into fruit machines identified many issues with the Fruit Machine industry including corruption and bribery at very high levels. Fruit machines continued to operate until declared illegal and replaced by licensed electronic poker machines legal only in casinos, hotels and clubs.
