Around 1135, Geoffrey of Monmouth synthesized disparate accounts in his History of the Kings of Brittany (Historia Regum Britanniae). The first attestation of Merlin's name in literature, this text defines the main characteristics of the character in the Arthurian legend. It presents him as a fatherless orphan. Vortigern's magicians wish to sacrifice him to consolidate the tower of his castle, which is constantly collapsing, but Merlin guesses the presence of the two underground dragons that are disturbing the work. The story of the Historia Brittonum is thus repeated almost without change. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merlin
