The Tour de Constance was erected in Aigues-Mortes by Saint Louis in 1242, on the former site of the Tour Matafère, built by Charlemagne around 790 to house the king's garrison. This construction was part of the transformation of Aigues-Mortes into a strategic point with a port opening onto the Mediterranean.
