Melvin Cornell "Mel" Blount (April 10, 1948 -) was arguably one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks of all time with a reputation as one of the league’s most feared defensive backs. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Blount in the 3rd round of the 1970 NFL draft, spending his entire professional career (1970-1983) with the team. Blount became a starter in the Steelers secondary beginning in 1972, and did not allow a single touch down that season. His quickness and fierce determination on the field aided in establishing the squad as one of the NFL’s most dominant teams of the 1970s. His aggressive knack for overpowering receivers with a "bump and run" defense ultimately led the NFL to establish more stringent rules and made harassment of a receiver illegal – the guideline is now known as the "Mel Blount Rule." A five-time Pro Bowler (including 1976 MVP honors), the 1975 NFL Defense Player of the Year and Defensive Back of the Year award winner, and a member of four Super Bowl champion Steelers teams, Blount ended his career with 57 interceptions, which he returned for 736 yards and two touchdowns. He intercepted at least one pass in all 14 seasons and led the league in interceptions (11) in 1975. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989.This coin is part of 95 Super Steelers Pittsburgh NFL Giant Eagle Complete Set of 9 Coins
