These tokens were given to children for use in merchandising machines (toy capsules, etc.) near the checkout area at some Piggly Wiggly stores, including ones in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
When Piggly Wiggly opened its doors in
Memphis, Tennessee in 1916, it was the first truly modern American supermarket by introducing self-service grocery shopping, shopping carts, price-marked items, and employees in uniform.
