The camp was built on Torsten Hartvig Nielsen's Kulsø ideas. in the construction of 5 Viking ships, a full-size reconstruction of the Oseberg wagon and a reconstruction of the Hedeby center with 11 Viking houses. After the camp, this became the start of the scouting center Ny Hedeby. The camp was divided into 6 sub-camps named after some of the Viking Age cities: Birka, Dorestad, Grobin, Hedeby, Kaupang and York.
Preparations for the camp had started as early as 1967, when the two southern Jutland divisions bought Stevninghus with the help of the corps. After that, Hartvig started bringing his thoughts to life, aided by scouts, foresters, robbers and leaders. The work was done only using old tools.
