Left side of the flag: the coat of arms of Provence
The Provençal coat of arms that adorns the flag is composed of four vertical, parallel red stripes on a yellow background. It bears a strong resemblance to that of Catalonia, due to the influence exerted by the Catalan counts who ruled historic Provence from the 13th century onwards.
As a result, the colors of this family have been adopted in both Catalonia and Provence, and appear on the PACA flag.
Upper right-hand quarter of the flag: the Dauphiné coat-of-arms
The Dauphiné coat of arms features a golden dauphin on an azure background in two of the four corners.
On the opposite side are fleur-de-lys on a blue background.
The flag of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur features only the dauphin, emblem of the province's lords, while the fleurs-de-lys are the emblem of France.
Flag lower right quarter: the coat of arms of Comté de Nice
The coat of arms of this historic province depicts a crowned red eagle perched on three sandy mountains rising from a stormy sea, all on a white background.
The eagle on the flag is said to originate from the Holy Roman Empire, to which the House of Savoy belonged. https://omnilogie.fr/O/Origine_des_blasons_des_régions_françaises_:_en_métropole
