In 1852, at the age of 13, John Mock and his family journeyed across the American frontier, spending between 4 to 6 months on the Oregon Trail. They settled on 317 acres of land, part of which went on to become the University of Portland, and Mock’s Crest, the neighborhood named after Mock. In his lifetime, he donated land to Columbia University, expanded the roads and street railway connecting Portland to St. Johns, and invested in mining, transportation, farming, and real estate ventures, which has made Portland the city that it is today.

Before Mock’s Crest Tavern was a tavern, it was a butcher’s shop - and a pharmacy before that.
