The most famous of the Franciscans of Nice is Brother Marc, who became "fray Marcos de Niza" and is said to have named the site of the future city of San Francisco (California) after the founder of his order.
Originally, the chapel of Notre-Dame de Cimiez was built by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pons. This chapel is mentioned in a charter of the Abbey of St. Pons dated December 30, 1010. On November 15, 1546, the abbey ceded the chapel and the surrounding land to the Friars Minor of the Observance, who no longer had a convent since the siege of Nice in 1543. The Franciscans developed the architectural ensemble over the centuries. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monast%C3%A8re_de_Cimiez
