Comment

The column, dedicated to Petrarch, was erected in 1804 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Italian poet's birth. The column stood for twenty-five years in the basin of the fountain itself.
Francesco Petrarca or Petrarch (1304-1374), lived in Fontaine de Vaucluse and composed several works, including Canzoniere ("Book of Songs") written in Tuscan, his native language. This work celebrates a long passion developed in the author by the sight of a woman called Laure in the church of Sainte-Claire in Avignon.
