During a small-scale excavation in 2002 on the square in front of the Catharinakerk in Eindhoven skeletal remains from the Middle Ages were found. The only grave that has been further investigated was from a boy about 10 years old. With him buried was a coin (a grosso of the Doge of Venice) on which St Mark was pictured, so the boy was knicknamed Marcus van Eindhoven. On 1 November 2005 the first coin was minted, it is a replica of the coin that was buried with him.
