The Copères
The people of Dinant are called the "Copères", and according to the people of Dinant, there are only Copères in Dinant! But where does this nickname come from? Legend has it that the Burgundians, charged with tying Dinanters in pairs and throwing them into the Meuse during the sack of the town in 1466, said"Co one paire" each time, hence the nickname... On a more serious note, the famous linguist Jean Haust saw in the word "copère" a derivative of "compère"...
But etymologists have found the word "Copère" to have a Germanic origin: whether from the Flemish koper, the German kufper or the English cooper, it doesn't matter. Each of these words means "copper", and the reputation of the people of Dinant was that of masters of copper work. As early as the 10th century, did they not go to Cologne and further afield in Germany for their copper? Didn't they have a rich and regular clientele in London and throughout the great fairs of the Middle Ages?
Dinant is the only town to have given its name to a craft that made its reputation throughout Europe in the Middle Ages.
