ROUEN (CITY OF...)An ancient city of the Veliocasses, Rotomagus developed in Roman times and became a metropolis of Lyonnaise II at the end of the 4th century. Captured on several occasions by the Normans, it became one of their main stations. In 911, it became the residence of the Dukes of Normandy. A commune in 1144, it belonged to France from 1204 to 1419, when it passed to the English until 1449. The Exchequer of Normandy became a sovereign court in 1499, then a parliament in 1515. Under the Ancien Régime, the town was a flourishing center of the textile industry (Rouenneries and Indiennes) and of trade with Africa.
