MACHAULT (or MACHAUT) D'ARNOUVILLE.Born in Paris in 1667, he became an officer in the Picardie regiment. Returning to civilian life, he became a lawyer before being appointed Lieutenant General of Police in 1718, a position he held for two years. He later became a member of the Conseil d'Etat, and died in Paris in 1750.
During his two-year tenure, Machault d'Arnouville focused on ways to ensure the tranquility of Paris. Not only did he ban the most dangerous forms of gambling, but he also made it compulsory for police commissioners to place a lantern in front of their residences in order to signal their presence to their fellow citizens. He was forced to resign after Marshal de Villars was attacked on his way from Versailles to Paris.
It should be noted that the founder of the Simon 1er de Machault dynasty was commissaire-examinateur at the Châtelet de Paris in 1515.
