The man with his signature on this token was very famous in the development of retail business on State Street. Referred to as the "Merchant Prince". He was born in 1847 died 1949. Yes the dates are correct he lived to be 102 years old. Out lived two wives. His retail activities survived through 4 wars and 5 economic crises. Said to have quit drink and smoking in his 70s. He retired at 70 years old but continued to go to work until he was 100 years old. The build in the photo he had built in 1903. The hub store was founded in 1887. He and his brother first started a clothing business in Michigan. He got his first taste of the clothing business when he worked as an errand boy as a teenager. I did not search any further but stores with his name were still operating in the late 20th century.
