This medal honors Giuseppe Garibaldi, the man who united Italy in the 1860's.He was born in Nice the 4th of July 1807. At that time, Nice belonged to the kingdom of Sardinia. When Italy was united by Garibaldi under the king of Sardinia, Victor Emanuel II of Savoye, he received the help of the French emperor, Napoleon III.
