Comment
The 5c coin was first issued when South Africa's currency coins were decimilised in 1961. During the next 50 years, the 5c coin would undergo two transformations. In 1965 a nickel 5c coin featuring the South African national bird, the Blue Crane, replaced the silver coin used from 1961 to 1964.The Blue Crane remained on the reverse during the 2nd transformation, when it was reissued as a copper plated coin in 1990.
The minting of 5c coins for South Africa was discontinued in 2011.
