''This... token was issued in 1876 during the U. S. centennial to advertise Dobbins Electric Soap, a product of I. L. Cragin & Company in Philadelphia. This company, a soap manufacturer, capitalized on the public's fascination with electricity to market this product. In fact, the product (laundry soap) was formulated to be very alkaline to give it a bit of a 'sting' to live up to its name!! The obverse of this great token (with the French date 4 JUIL - 1776) fit into the nation's centennial celebration by featuring a design very similar to that of the Libertas Americana medal issued in Paris in 1782, using a concept from Benjamin Franklin.
