Comment

1893 Columbian Exposition Token -- Struck Over an 1853 Arrows and Rays Seated Quarter -- Eglit-216. The obverse is the Eglit-216 design, featuring a right-facing profile of Christopher Columbus (vaguely reminiscent of that on the contemporaneous commemorative half dollar) with WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION around; the reverse is dated 1893 and reads (around) STRUCK IN THE CANADIAN COURT CHICAGO, 1893 (in straight lines) TO / COMMEMORATE / THE / WORLDS / FAIR. The Rays motif from the underlying quarter and parts of the central eagle design from the quarter are plainly visible under the commemorative text on the reverse, and the underdate 1853 and much of the quarter are also plain on the obverse. The surfaces show some luster and vary from slate-gray to silver-white. This piece shows a puncture for suspension.
