In 1892, a workers' cooperative society, "La Fraternelle", was founded in Mouscron. It soon became the key organ of socialist activity in Mouscron and the surrounding area. Its success necessitated the construction of more ambitious premises. Thus, in 1897, two new infrastructures appeared: the Maison du Peuple and the Cooperative Bakery, on the site of today's socialist "Fraternelle". The war thwarted dreams of expansion, but at the same time, the services provided by the cooperative during this dark period increased its membership. New facilities were built: the Palais des fêtes, with an auditorium and dance hall, and a building for the Enfants du Peuple.
