Comment
In 1987, the Air Force Museum was founded in Appen, near Hamburg, with items from a private collection. After 1990, the dissolution of the National People's Army of the GDR (Nationale Volksarmee der DDR) expanded the holdings of this collection. In 1995, the museum moved to the former Berlin-Gatow military airfield, from where airlift planes took off and landed during the 1948/49 Berlin blockade.Since 2010, the museum has belonged to the Bundeswehr Military History Museum (Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr) in Dresden, and will be renovated over the next few years. The focus of this exhibition, which is more strongly oriented towards cultural history, will be on aerial warfare, a recent form of military violence.
Today's outdoor display of aircraft, helicopters, radar and anti-aircraft systems provides an insight into the development of military aviation and defense during the Cold War era. Hangar 3 deals with air warfare in Germany since 1884, while Hangar 7 presents the history of the Federal Republic of Germany's armed forces, including pilot training and workplaces. The control tower presents the history of the Gatow airfield. Temporary exhibitions are also held here.
