Vernazza is surely the most picturesque village of the Cinque Terre. The name of the village comes from its founders, an ancient Roman family, the Vulnetia. Vernazza was the most prosperous of the Cinque Terre villages.
The village developed rapidly along the Vernazzola stream.
The prosperity of the village was certainly due to its strategic importance.
The square was protected and played an important role in the period of the Marine Republics. The castle of the Doria is the best testimony of this past prosperity.
In 2011 the town was evacuated following the exceptional floods of October. It is known that the Cinque Terre was strongly affected by this climatic phenomenon but it was in Vernazza that the damage was the most important. The village was evacuated. A torrent of mud broke through the steep streets of the town center. 100 million euros had to be spent to repair the damage.
