Comment

Official Medals below authorized by Congress as "national medals"; designed by J. A. Links; struck at United States Mint, Philadelphia . Reverse portrays famous Hansen Pony Express horse and rider, first painted by Herman Hansen in water color in 1900. Issue consisted of 500,000 Bronze (authorized; perhaps 50,000 to 100,000 struck) and 5,000 Silver.
Part of the Centennial celebration included a 1699 mile race in both directions using 1000 horses and riders.
The official size of the medals are 1 5/16 inches (33.34mm). All the medals in my collect measure slightly larger 33.65-33.69mm.
