1826 Erie Canal Completion Medal in Gold, HK-1001, PR62. Ex: President John Quincy Adams, and presented to him during his administration. Only three examples in gold are known. The medal being offered, graded NGC PR62, is one of only two privately held examples, with the other being an NGC-graded XF45 example, which sold as lot 81492 at our 2007 September Long Beach sale for $63,250. The only other gold Erie Canal Completion medal to appear at public auction was part of the W.W.C. Wilson collection, offered by Anderson Galleries in 1925 as cataloged by Wayte Raymond. That medal, presented to Andrew Jackson, was donated to the New York Historical Society in 1932 where it resides today.
