Comment

Paduans were replicas or possibly forgeries of ancient coins executed in the 16th century by Giovanni del Cavino, nicknamed "il Paduano" (Padova, 1500-1570), and Bassiano. The two men faithfully copied ancient coins and also invented new reverse designs in a very faithful classical style, demonstrating a profound knowledge of history and numismatics. Although they may be considered forgeries or replicas, panduans are highly collectable for their beautiful workmanship and considered renaissance art. 122 of Cavino's dies are in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. They were brought from Italy in the 17th century by Lecomte, who bought them from the Lazzara family of Padua. They are described and illustrated by Claude du Molinet in Le Cabinet de la Bibliothèque de Sainte Geneviève, Paris, 1692.
