Comment
#266827 describes the reverse as "A guardian angel talking to the child Jesus", however the child (who appears older than the infant on the obverse) appears female to me. Also, unlike the obverse, the child does not have a halo. From 1830 to the present day, four generations of medalist artists have signed their works with the name of Penin. This Provençal family, of Flemish origin, engraved enough medals to illustrate the political, religious or economic history of Lyon through them.
Ludovic Penin (1830-1868) decided to edit the medals he engraved. More than his father, he composed many religious medals and the quality of his work earned him the title of “pontifical engraver” granted in 1864 by the Papal brief of Pius IX.
