Comment

Tempted by King Philip II's supposed reward of 80,000 ducats, Spanish fur merchant Gaspar de Añastro persuaded his 19-year-old accounting assistant Juan de Jáuregui to assassinate William the Silent, Prince of Orange, offering him a reward of 2877 crowns. On 18 March 1582, as the Prince exited his dining-room in Antwerp, Jáuregui fired a pistol at his head. It malfunctioned, however, and the Prince survived his assassination attempt and ultimately recovered although the bullet did hit him; Jáuregui was killed on the spot. Two years later, Balthasar Gérard succeeded in assassinating Prince William with a handgun. Further reference: vL. I 309.2.
