The World Capital of BogračHome of the most recognizable dish of Lendava is the bograč stew. The legend of bograč, on the other hand, originates in Hungary. The stew was cooked at the annual meetings of the shepherds tending various animals. Each shepherd brought to the meeting the meat of their livestock and some onions. At the end of the shepherds' games, they would light a fire and bring a pot called ''bograč''. Each would put their piece of meat in, along with some wine from their wooden flask. The result of this was an excellent meat dish called bograč stew.
The former president of Slovenia, Dr. Danilo Türk, declared Lendava the World Capital of Bograč on 26 August 2011 and was the first to sign in the Book of the World Capital of Bograč. This initiative had in fact been born many years ago, when he had visited the event known as Bogračfest. After the President and the Mayor of the Municipality of Lendava unveiled a memorial plaque dedicated to the capital at the Town Hall, the drums solemnly rang out and the mortar resounded with a loud bang, marking this yet another important historical event for Lendava.
