San Juan National Historic Site, Puerto Rico, includes the Spanish built forts of El Morro, El Canu- elo and San Cristóbal and the Old City Walls. The structures date from 1539-1787 and represent one of the earliest European type masonry fortifications in the Americas. The San Juan fortifications were built to create an impregnable position at the eastern entrance to the Caribbean Sea. The strategic location of San Juan Harbor made the Island of Puerto Rico vitally important to the Spanish Imperial System in the New World. Today a measure of Spain's ancient power, these massive fortifications form a historic bond between Spain and the Americas.
