A view of the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Troyes.From 1198, bishops Garnier de Trainel and then Hervée set about building one of the largest and most beautiful cathedrals in France, starting with the chevet chapels on the site of the ancient Gallo-Roman ramparts. The transept was built in 1260 and the first spans of the nave from 1310, but the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) interrupted the work. The west facade, a masterpiece by Parisian master mason Martin Chambiges, was completed in 1554, along with the base of the Saint-Pierre tower (not completed until 1634).
The Saint-Paul Tower, however, was never built, due to a crisis of faith and lack of funding. Built over more than 400 years, the cathedral illustrates the stages of the Gothic, Radiant and Flamboyant styles. At 114 m long and 28.50 m high, it is one of France's most famous for its elegance, the quality of its sculptures, paintings and tapestries, and especially its classified stained-glass windows (1,500 m2).
