Very Hungry God was created in 2006 and evokes a god who has become a universal, voracious and insatiable vanity. In this work, Gupta reflects the troubling duality that is the direct result of capitalist modes of production: on the one hand, the abundance that fascinates, on the other, the hunger that paralyzes. The work takes the form of a skull, created from hundreds of gleaming stainless steel utensils used in the majority of middle- and lower-class kitchens in India.
