The citadel, from the top of its 500 m of altitude, is the masterpiece of the city (11th - 13th - 16th - 19th c.). Jehan Sarrazin, military engineer of Henri IV, then Sébastien Vauban have marked it with their seal. The Towers, welded to the works of the Citadel, are part of the enclosure built around 1370 to protect the city from the armed bands coming back from France. Most of the ramparts and the gates were knocked down in the 19th century. Prosper Mérimée saved the last 5 towers, which were also to be thrown down. This visual is a work of Frédérique Maillart, sculptor-engraver.
