The Peace Palace (het vredespaleis) in The Hague (S'Gravenhage), home to the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the International Court of Justice of the United Nations, The Hague Academy of International Law and a large law library.Completed in 1913, it was the subject of an international competition, won by French architect Louis-Marie Cordonnier, with a neo-Renaissance design. The building is emblazoned with the city's coat of arms, depicting a stork (a good-luck symbol) with an eel (once caught in the pond surrounding the seat of government) in its beak, and the Dutch motto: "Je maintiendrai" ("I will maintain").
