The Tour de Constance.
Erected on the site of the ancient Tour Matafère by Saint-Louis, the Tour de Constance was built in 1242 to protect the port and the town. It is Aigues-Mortes' only defensive element. A standing bridge linked the châtelet to the tower, which was originally surrounded by a ring moat. In 1249, it was referred to as the King's Tower. In 1254, on the return from the Seventh Crusade, it was completed.
The Tower's inner defense was skilfully organized: a first door with thick leaves and a portcullis, a second door, which when open completely conceals the entrance to the staircase leading to the upper floors, and a final door closed by a lock and crossbar.
