The abbey of Le Thoronet was founded in the 12th century in Provence, for a community of only twenty monks, not counting the lay people, at a time when it was under the authority of the Holy Roman Empire under Frederick I Barbarossa (1152-1190). The empire then extended from Bohemia to the Rhone. Le Thoronet was the first Cistercian presence in this region. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbaye_du_ThoronetPrice
