The Abbey of Le Thoronet was founded in Provence in the 12th century, for a community of just twenty monks, not counting the converses, at a time when the abbey was under the authority of the Holy Roman Empire under Frederick I Barbarossa (1152-1190). The empire stretched from Bohemia to the Rhone. Le Thoronet was the first Cistercian settlement in the region. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbaye_du_Thoronet
