Commissioned in 1960, with a crew of 7 officers and 60 sailors, Espadon's mission was to monitor ocean areas and shipping lanes. In September 1961, the submarine collided with the Laubie. On August 13, 1963, a fire in the torpedo compartment injured four submariners, one of whom later died of his wounds. In May 1964, l'Espadon and le Marsouin dived under the Norwegian Sea ice pack at 70°N latitude.
It was decommissioned on September 11, 1985. Since then, L'Espadon has been moored in the fortified lock of the Saint-Nazaire submarine base, having made its last dive on December 10, 1985 with 15 of its 16 commanders. L'Espadon is the first visitable submarine, having become a museum ship. Faussement à flot dans une cale remplie d'eau de pluie, il fait l'objet durant le premier semestre 2021, sur place, de travaux de conservation par le chantier de l'Esclain. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espadon_(S637)
