Napoleon planned to give Pontivy great importance in central Brittany: he wanted to make the city of 3,000 inhabitants "in peace, the center of great commerce, and in war, an important military center". From 18 brumaire an XII (November 9, 1804), it was known as "Napoléonville".(Source: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontivy)
Undertaken thanks to an imperial grant awarded by Emperor Napoleon III during a visit to Pontivy, St. Joseph's church was built in the heart of the town's Napoleonic quarter, to plans by Parisian architect Marcellin-Emmanuel Varcollier, between 1863 and 1867. With the imperial subsidy exhausted, work was halted and the church remained unfinished. The spire planned to crown the bell tower was never built. Between 1991 and 1994, contemporary stained-glass windows were installed, breathing new life into the building.
