The palace is located on the Puig del Rei (puig means hill in Catalan) which dominates the plain of Roussillon and the city of Perpignan and which faces the popular and picturesque district of Saint-Mathieu. The snowy peaks of the Canigou massif can be seen in the distance. Among these buildings is the Majorcan palace of Jaume II which testifies to the wealth of this small Mediterranean kingdom of the 13th century. The medieval palace is surrounded by a first citadel by the king of France Louis XI, reinforced by the emperor Charles V. It was replaced in the 16th century by the citadel visible today by his son, King Philip II of Spain. ttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palais_des_Rois_de_Majorque
