The collection was established in 1668 on the initiative of Louvois, Minister of War of Louis XIV. The first model to be executed was that of Dunkirk. It was quickly followed by those of Ath and the citadel of Lille. At the unique scale of 1 foot for 100 toises, i.e. approximately 1/600th since 1680, they are a testimony of the state of these cities or fortresses at that time. According to the inventory drawn up by Vauban in 1697, the collection, installed in the Tuileries Palace, included 144 relief plans, representing 101 fortified sites. Initially, they were intended to be seen only by the king and his staff. Of the models made under Louis XIV, only thirty remain. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mus%C3%A9e_des_Plans-reliefsPrice
