One of the most famous directors of the Royal Garden was the naturalist Georges Louis Leclerc, Count de Buffon (1707-1788). Appointed superintendent of the Jardin du Roy in 1739, succeeding Charles François de Cisternay du Fay, he held the position until his death. Expanding the place without hesitating to advance the costs with his own money, he made it one of the most important scientific research centers in Europe at that time. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jardin_des_plantes_de_Paris
