Clément Ader's "Chauve-souris".This masterpiece of the Musée des arts et métiers was restored in the 1980s by the Musée de l'air et de l'espace in its Meudon workshops.
This aircraft, with a wingspan of just over 15 meters, powered by two twenty-horsepower steam engines and two propellers, was built between 1894 and 1897 in Paris at the Rue Jasmin workshops. The materials used were mainly wood, with steel, brass and aluminum in a few rare parts. The wing sails were made from a silk pongee which, although tightly woven, remained permeable to air. This labor-intensive prototype was first tested in October 1897. Interrupted after an accident, it was not pursued for lack of financial resources. However, a flight of three hundred meters was claimed by Ader and confirmed by two witnesses.

"Omnes docet ubique" is the motto of the CNAM (Conservatoire national des Arts et Métiers) and means "Teaching everyone everywhere" (Abbé Grégoire, 1794).
