It was the initiative of two railroad enthusiasts, the Mulhouse industrialist Jean-Mathis Horrenberger (owner of a textile factory) and the Parisian railroad history expert Michel Doerr, that the museum was born in 1971. The first locomotives parked in Chalon-sur-Saône moved to Mulhouse and were temporarily placed in the old depot in Mulhouse-Nord. In 1976, the new buildings of the current museum received their first visitors. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cit%C3%A9_du_train
