Château de Suscinio, the residence of the Dukes of Brittany, stands on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in the commune of Sarzeau (Morbihan), in the heart of what was once a vast wooded area. Built in the late Middle Ages, it is located on the Rhuys peninsula, today made up of salt marshes and meadows. The château was one of the great ducal residences to emerge in Brittany under the impetus of powerful dukes.
Long left in a state of ruin, the château was finally listed in 1840 after Prosper Mérimée's visit five years earlier, putting it on the first list of historic monuments. At the time, the château was visited for the romantic character of its ruins.
