The entrance to the museum is flanked on one side by flagpoles bearing the flags of the main countries involved in the Battle of Normandy, and on the other by a display case showing the twelve "first stones" of the edifice, extracted from their soil by each of the twelve nations involved, and adorned with a lapidary inscription in each of their languages.
